Copy Editor

Role Description

A copy editor will improve the text provided by technical authors, non-native English authors, or poorer contributors. At a minimum, a copy editor will ensure that the text is grammatically correct and readable. At a higher level, a copy editor will convert the texts into easily digestible material with well constructed prose. At the highest level of copy editing, the text will be restructured to ensure that the key messages are highlighted, reference sites are identified and the solution benefits compellingly conveyed.

Role Capabilities

A copy editor is able to understand poorly structured English or highly technical text and to clarify the underlying messages. A copy editor is good at grasping the essence from a series of jumbled thoughts. A good copy editor will have a strong appreciation of the key sales messages and ensure they are appropriately included in any text that he/she is working on.

Role Experience

A copy editor will typically be a graduate with a few years of experience in a business development role of some description. A copy editor will have proven his/her ability with the written language by having contributed to a number of complex successful business documents. A higher level copy editor will have had experience of direct selling.
